The pact for Italian rheumatology has been signed. Italian rheumatology community joins forces to defend the rights and demands of the more than 5.5 million Italians who suffer from a rheumatic disease.
Here’s the 10 main points of the strategic manifesto for an active rheumatology:
1 – Updating and homogeneous application of the National Chronicity Plan throughout the National territory to allow all patients the accessibility to assistance, the effective management and the therapeutic approach’s multidisciplinarity with an organic and uniform activation of rheumatology networks.
2 – Research and early diagnosis: investing in the training of general practitioners (GPs) and free choice paediatricians (PFC), streamlining the procedures to get to specialistic examinations, cutting down the waiting lists to speed up the procedures and the opportunities for treatment.
3 – Information, formation and awareness:
Building up the patients’ cultural awareness of their disease so that they can recognize themselves as the first active protagonists of their own treatment;
Specific training for general practitioners and free choice pediatricians. That’s the first goal for the patients and a crucial aspect of the diagnostic-therapeutic evolution;
Usage of an “orange ribbon for rheumatology” as a communicative code of the common commitment to fight rheumatological diseases that makes it possible to know, recognize and help defeat a core of different pathologies against which it’s possible and necessary to act;
Increasing the number of the specialization schools’ positions, the total number of territorial specialization hours and the number of hospital and territorial operating units.
4 – Prevention culture: focus on an healthy lifestyle, proper nutrition, regular sport activities and avoidance from smoking and drinking alcohol must all be life solid principles, especially for their relevancy to rehumatic diseases’ prevention.
5 – Multidisciplinarity of the therapeutic-assistance approach: not just in episodes of patients’ co-morbidities, but on the same level of specific specialist treatment, it’s necessary to consider all the physical and psychological aspects and implications of the person and his family members’ facing a diagnosis of rheumatological pathology.
6 – Focus on pediatric rheumatology: treating it early and effectively to avoid complications, degenerations or the loss of autonomy.
Therefore, to encourage schools’ placement and the usage of medicine in them, ensuring the presence of pediatric assistance and investing in information and training for staff.
7 – Regular work and agile work: promoting and encouraging training, start-up and application of rules that establish working conditions which would be compatible with the disease, and establish the need to protect the active social role of the persons, taking their specific conditions as patients into account.
8 – Women and rheumatology: supporting and ensuring an healthy livability to the whole female dimension, meant as both women as persons, and their sexual relationships, pregnancies and motherhood.
9 – Psychological aspects: focusing the goal on the patients to protect the integrity and authenticity of their personal, professional, relational, familiar and social lives; protecting the active, conscious, dignified and autonomous role as much as possible, in every life’s context.
10 – Translational research: focus on interdisciplinary collaboration between general practitioners, free choice pediatricians and all specialists involved in the health and care of each patient, creating a direct and evolutionary multidirectional channel of combined skills for the patients’ benefit and the National Health Service’s virtuosity.
